How to hide Facebook's Trending Topics Column

It’s been a while since Facebook has decided to be more like Yahoo and introduced the Trending Topics sidebar in homepage. I have never been a fan of this and it irritates the heck out of me when
I just want to check my damn messages!
Facebook whole

As you can see I’m not particularly interested in the topics atm. Luckily you can tweak the CSS styling of Facebook easily with a simple Google Chrome extension called Stylebot (there are other similar extensions, use what you like). Unlike some dedicated extensions for modifying Facebook look-and-feel (F.B. Purity and others), Stylebot (or similar) extension will give you full detailed control and won’t tap into your activities. Here’s how:

Step 1:  Have Google Chrome (duh)

Step 2:
Get Stylebot from the chrome webstore.

Step 3:
Open your Facebook homepage

Step 4:
There should be a button titled “CSS” near the top right corner of Google Chrome window. Click on it to get the dropdown menu and click “Open Stylebot”

Select      Select open

Step 5:
You will see the actual “stylebot” pop up now. You may want to move the thing to the left at this point.
Move left

Now make sure you have that selection tool thingy selected. If not, select it:
Selection Tool

Step 6:
Select the trending topics box. You’d want to select the entire box for now.
Select the devil

Step 7:
Hide

Make sure you have that box selected.

Now scroll down in the Stylebot and click  “Hide”

Ta da !

That annoying piece of irritating thing is gone! If it didn’t work, try doing a refresh.

   gone

Make sure your Stylebot is not turned off every time you visit Facebook. The modified CSS style will take effect automatically every time you visit Facebook so you don’t have to do these again!

Side-effects:

Wait don’t go yet. There is just one problem!

This hides the sidebar entirely and it extends beyond just the homepage. Sometimes that can mean that you’re missing out information that you actually want to see. For example:
Sideffect

But sweat not! There is a solution! Read on…

Step 8: Remove styling

There is a way to fix the above problem. Lets go back to the Facebook home page first. Now You need to remove the custom styling you have just done. Just click “Remove styling” in the Stylebot menu.

Now repeat step 6 and 7. Only this time you select each element of the sidebar one by one:
onebyone

The end result will have this white box instead of blank space:
gone2

That’s not as pretty as before. But it solves the problem and still really acceptable ^_^ . Hope this increases your Facebook experience and increases productivity! Enjoy :)

P.S. The images are coming as blurry for some reason. I’m using Windows Live Writer and this is really degrading image quality while scaling. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

NIOSii Assembly language – Syntax highlighting

TLDR version: Download here , instructions included.

Coding without syntax highlighting is a pain in the butt. That is even more true in assembly with non-intuitive instructions and non-elaborate names for registers etc. This semester I had the course Computer Organization (ECE243). When we weren’t playing with lego and drawing CPU diagrams, we were busy coding the Altera DE2 board with assembly. I could just do most of the work in C though. But are you a C-programmer or are you a hacker? :P

Apparently Assembly language for NIOSii processors is not really popular ….well, not popular enough to have syntax in Sublime Text or Notepad++ !
It turns out, making a custom syntax highlight language is pretty easy in Notepad++ *. There is even a GUI for making it! So I made two! – one for light background and another for dark. Here is how you use it:

        - Download the files from here and unzip them
        - Read the ReadMe.txt if you’re bored of this post already
        - Open Notepad++
        - Click Language > Define your language > Create New > Import
        - Select either of the .xml files provided
        - Get out of that user defined language editor
        - You will now see your new language in the language list

You will get something like this instead of one monotonous colour….Capture

* I have to take this opportunity to condemn the author of Notepad++ for pushing his opinions about a certain French “newspaper” down our throats in one of the latest revisions of the software. I wonder where his opinions are at when real journalists get killed instead.

Android app release – Cryptify! encryption app on Google Play

Need a way to hide a message? No worries! With Cryptify, you can now encrypt a message in one touch and send it right under the noses of unwanted people. Cryptify allows you to transform a text into a seemingly meaningless combination of letters, numbers and symbols. And with the correct four digit password, you can decipher the hidden message in no time!

To download this amazing app from Google Play store, click here!

Feature graphic

Yes, with such a handy app on your Android device, you can leave your message in plain sight but anyone you don’t want reading it will have no clue what it is!

This app goes way back when I did something similar for my grade 12 CS final project. I learnt a bit of Android programming last year and decided to turn that into an Android app. I worked on it over the Christmas break and finished in January this year. I didn’t publish it then because of skule and my lack of understanding about export laws and whatnot. Long story short, this is my first Android app, here I am publishing it today :-).

Text manipulation is fun! Try it some time!

Visual Studio 2013 theme – Dark Blue with Dark Editor

Download Link

It is important to customize your IDE and/or text editor by your preference. I personally prefer dark backgrounds as I find them easier on my eyes. This is a theme for Visual Studio 2013 that I think is optimum in this regard. It is essentially an edited version of Solarized Blue where you have the interface of Visual Studio in Solarized Blue with a darker, blacker text editor. Download it here.

You will need the ‘customize colors’ extension/plug-in to import this into your software. You can get it from the msdn site here. After installing the extension, go to Tools > Customize Colors. From there you will see an option for importing a theme.

Visual Studio is a great IDE for developing in Windows environment. You can download and try it from here if don’t have it already.

Have fun :)

Test Post

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

I wonder if anyone actually reads random blogs. I just made one because I feel like having a public storage place. Kind of like delicious.com ....may be.
